Claude Code vs Pi
The agent harness is the real product. Models are increasingly commoditized. Control over Context, Model, Prompt, and Tools is your ceiling — the harness determines how high you can push it.
Core Insight
The asset is your skills, not your tool loyalty. Start with Claude Code while learning — it gives you the highest velocity per unit of cognitive overhead. Move to Pi when you hit customization walls or need model diversity. The answer is AND not OR.
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Dimension | Claude Code | Pi |
|---|---|---|
| Philosophy | Batteries included — opinionated, full-stack agent harness | Build only what you need — minimal, composable |
| Models | ~6 Claude aliases (Sonnet, Opus, Haiku variants) | 324 models across 20+ providers |
| System Prompt | ~10K tokens, opinionated and feature-rich | ~200 tokens, fully replaceable |
| Hooks | 14 lifecycle hooks | 25+ TypeScript hooks |
| Multi-agent | Built-in (subagents, teams, SendMessage) | DIY — wire your own orchestration |
| Enterprise | SSO, audit trails, IDE integrations | Terminal-only, no enterprise layer |
When to Use Each
Use Claude Code when:
- →Learning agentic coding — fastest ramp, richest defaults
- →Daily velocity matters — 80% of workload runs here
- →Multi-agent orchestration via built-in subagents/teams
- →Enterprise context: SSO, audit, IDE integration
- →You want the full ecosystem: hooks, memory, MCP, CLAUDE.md
Evaluate Pi when:
- →You need models outside the Claude family (GPT, Gemini, Mistral, etc.)
- →You want to replace the system prompt entirely with your own
- →Hook depth: 25+ TypeScript hooks vs Claude Code's 14
- →Mission-critical pipelines where full customization is the point
- →You have already mastered Claude Code and hit real walls
Progression Path
Single-agent, supervised. Learn Core Four. Ship your first complete agentic workflow.
Add hooks, CLAUDE.md tuning, memory files. Improve per-session context quality.
Parallel agents, multi-step jobs, Carlos/Oliver conductor patterns.
Hit a wall? Pi is now installed on all machines — evaluate for model flexibility or hook depth. AND not OR.
Claude Code for daily velocity, Pi for mission-critical custom pipelines.
Pi Installation Status
Rolled out to all machines — 2026-04-15
Pi (@mariozechner/pi-coding-agent) is installed and verified on all three machines. Package name confirmed — not pi or @pipecat-ai/pi. Windows desktop runs v0.54.2; Mac Studio and VPS3 run v0.67.2.
